Obesity-related diseases account for nearly 10 percent of all medical spending in the United States or an estimated $147 billion a year, U.S. researchers said Monday.
This is an interestingly timed study- a lot I know who are vehemently against a nationalized health system are incredibly paranoid that the system would be overwhelmed by expensive unhealthy American citizens, which is beginning to seem much more legitimate. With a 26% obesity rate in the US, and that very obesity causing a lot of undue strain on the health system, it isn’t too much of a stretch to say that our American habit of eating way too much might become a very big tax problem. Of course, if one were to take this to it’s logical extension, the US would have pretty good reason to create a “fat tax”- which, much like it sounds, is a scary thought. Hmm.
