ABC News questions Undergrad value

graduateABC News recently ran an actually somewhat interesting article regarding the value of a basic Bachelor’s Degree- basically, stipulating that the purported “value” of a college degree (which used to be cited as being worth $1m) is often not of value to many people at all. Of course, I can entirely agree with this.

However, the examples they have managed to use are a little strange. The examples they use are three people- a Theater major, a “Human Development” major (I have no idea what it is either), and a Meteorology major. The examples aren’t from bigger tier schools either- we’re talking like places such as the Tier 4-ranked Rivier College. Honestly, I’d be much more teary-eyed about it if they’d use the example of some genius Engineering major from NC State or something, but whatever.

I’m not trying to insult these schools or majors, but this is a good indication that there might be way too much “bloat” in the education industry. I’m inclined to agree with ABC here- there are just too many colleges and too many kids who think they have to go, which results in a lot of money being paid for degrees which may not pay anyone back ever. Realistically, it seems much better nowadays just to get good business experience unless you want to go into a very strong academic field- the work experience will probably actually pay back.
