Things do not bode well for the new national health care laws. In Massachusetts, a state that has already implemented a health care system very similar to what was recently enacted on the national level, scammers have found that they can abuse the insurance system by purchasing loads of expensive insurance right before pricey medical care (something obviously planned, like fertility treatments, knee surgery, etc) and then immediately drop the coverage afterward, since they can rely on free health care for most other things. What this means, in layman’s terms, is that scammers abuse the system and run, driving up costs for legitimate buyers.
Of course, this will be possible with the national plan, and it’s worrisome. This is certainly not to imply that scamming doesn’t go on anyway — but a lot of doors have been opened for exploitation that weren’t there before, and these doors will have to be shut quickly lest the entire system implode on itself.
